Cutting tools: Who invented the replaceable insert? And when? In what material? And for what application?

Doing research for an article on cutting tools and wondering when the replaceable (indexable) insert was invented. Why and by whom.

There is probably more than one answer to this question because replaceable inserts have been used in so many ways for so long. Cave men used bone handles on their flint knives. The knives wore away quickly and a new piece of sharpened flint was lashed in place with leather thongs.
